Carlos Marcello (born Calogero Minacore, 1910–1993) was the head of the New Orleans organized-crime family from 1947 until his incarceration in the 1980s. Marcello became a target of Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy's organized-crime task force and was summarily deported to Guatemala on April 4, 1961; he re-entered the United States within months and resumed operations. The House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) examined Marcello closely in its 1976–79 investigation and concluded in its Final Report that Marcello "had the motive, means, and opportunity" to assassinate President Kennedy, while also finding no direct evidence that he did. An FBI informant, Edward Becker, reported that Marcello made a 1962 threat against the Kennedys; the FBI investigated the allegation, and the HSCA reviewed but could not corroborate it. Marcello denied involvement under oath to the HSCA in January 1978.
